At the base of the beautiful county of Hampshire, lies the waterfront city of Portsmouth. Renowned as an epicentre of naval history – thanks to its Historic Dockyard containing vessels such as the Mary Rose and the HMS Victory – Portsmouth has more recently gained a reputation as a contemporary hub, full of world-class attractions that can be enjoyed by all ages.
At the heart of this city lies Gunwharf Quays, a waterfront complex containing a designer shopping outlet, numerous leisure activities, and most importantly a well-equipped, substantial marina.
What are my berthing and anchorage options?
It goes without saying that Gunwharf Quays would be considered the first choice by the majority of yacht agents. Not only does it benefit from the luxury of its positioning – a fantastic launching point for a range of inland activities – but it also caters to yachts up to 80 metres in length.
Another option lies 15 miles down the coast at Southampton Ocean Village, which can host yachts up to 55 metres. It is worth noting that this location doesn’t offer as many luxury amenities as its counterpart, but it does have many restaurants and bars, along with the Royal Southampton Yacht Club.
A great option for smaller yachts (up to 30 metres) is the picturesque Port Hamble, which is nestled on the River Hamble in amongst a lively sailing community.
Our Top Tips for Making the Most of Portsmouth
After you’ve taken in the designer retail outlets and eaten in some of the best restaurants at Gunwharf Quays, we would highly recommend a visit to Spinnaker Tower. Despite being prone to crowds, the views it offers of the Solent are spectacular. You can even arrange an afternoon tea with a glass of champagne.
Portsmouth isn’t all about the cosmopolitan atmosphere. It is actually home to some of the most scenic sandy beaches on the South Coast. Your guests might also be interested to discover a lively water sports scene, covering everything from windsurfing to wakeboarding.
Whether you’re staying there or not, a day trip to Hamble-Le-Rice will give your guests the ultimate British seaside community experience. Here you will find an excellent selection of yachting facilities, not to mention some of the most inviting, quintessential country pubs on the South Coast.
Last but by no means least, guests would be strongly advised to take advantage of inland activities such as Highclere Castle, where you can immerse yourselves in a full Downton Abbey experience.
