Bristol Harbour
A Living Piece of Maritime History
Known as the “Floating Harbour”, Bristol’s docks are steeped in over 200 years of history. Unlike tidal harbours, Bristol’s water level remains constant thanks to the River Avon New Cut, a bypass dug in 1809 to control tidal flow. While the modern-day port of Bristol is downstream at Avonmouth, the Floating Harbour is now a vibrant space for leisure vessels.
Bristol’s maritime history shines through its historic vessels, such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s SS Great Britain – the world’s first iron-hulled, propeller-driven ocean liner – and a replica of the Matthew, in which John Cabot sailed to North America in 1497. The harbour is also home to several operational historic boats, including the steam tug Mayflower and the motor tug John King.
